“The axe is falling at TheGrio”
TheGrio, a multimedia network targeting the Black community, is downsizing dramatically. Byron Allen, whose Allen Media Group owns TheGrio, has laid off staffers and the managing editor.
“The axe is falling at TheGrio,” an insider told TheWrap this week. The insider said members of the podcast and video team have been laid off along with managing editor Christy Oglesby.
“Allen Media Group is making strategic changes to better position the company for growth that will result in expense and workforce reductions across all divisions,” the company said in a statement to TheWrap. The spokesperson declined to comment on the specific layoffs.
The news created a buzz throughout the industry as urban blogs continue to fail amid nationwide economic uncertainty.
TheGrio was acquired by Allen Media Group in 2016. The company also owns 27 television stations in 21 U.S. markets.
In addition to a website, TheGrio features live events, a cable network and a podcast network.
TheGrio prides itself on being the largest Black newsroom in the country. TheGrio.tv airs on 11 Fox-owned television stations.
TheGrio Awards celebrates the achievements and contributions of Black people in various fields.
