Actor Akili McDowell, 21, is charged in the shooting death of a man during a drug deal in Houston last month.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office announced McDowell’s arrest in a Facebook post on Monday.
Cesar Peralta, 20, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Houston apartment complex on July 20.
Apartment residents called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to report a fight and hearing gunshots. Arriving deputies found Peralta in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
McDowell is charged with murder and theft. He is being held on $400,000 bond, according to jail records. He is also being held on $210 bond for theft.
“This is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy,” Jonell Whitt, McDowell’s manager, said in a statement to The Associated Press.
McDowell is best known for his roles in “David Makes Man” and “Billions.”
In “David Makes Man,” McDowell played a gifted student living in a housing project while attending a magnet school. The TV show aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
McDowell also appeared in “The Astronaut Wives Club,” “Chase the Lion” and “I Am Athlete.” He also appeared in the award-winning film “The Waterboyz.”
