Former Bad Boy Records rapper G. Dep walked out of prison a free man on Thursday.

According to All Hip Hop, the retired rapper, born Trevell Coleman, was granted clemency by New York’s governor Kathy Hochul.

Family members greeted Coleman outside the gates at Fishkill Correctional Facility in upstate New York on Thursday.

In 2010, Coleman walked into the 25th Precinct in NY and confessed to shooting a man back in 1993. He told police the shooting weighed heavy on his mind and he was “just trying to get things right between himself and God.”

When Coleman gave his confession to police, he wasn’t aware that his victim had died as a result of the shooting.

Police matched the details of his confession to a cold case murder, and arrested Coleman.

He was convicted of 2nd-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on May 8, 2012.

In December 2023, Gov. Hochul approved Coleman’s clemency. He was eligible for parole in 2025.

While serving his time in prison, Coleman focused on self-improvement and education. He earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts.

The judge and prosecutor involved in his case also advocated for his parole. This prompted fans to wonder if he snitched on his former boss, Sean Combs.
