Peggy Moore, former senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, died in a multi-car crash on Friday evening. She was 60.
Moore and her wife Hope Wood, 48, were in a Jeep when a Chrysler veered into their vehicle, killing them both.
The driver of their Jeep and the Chrysler driver also died. Police said the Chrysler driver veered into the wrong lane before hitting the Jeep head on.
Moore was a campaign worker and senior adviser for Obama. She has been described as a “giant” in political circles.
She served as deputy field director for Obama’s 2008 campaign. Moore and Hope met while working on Obama’s 2008 campaign. Moore was also a senior adviser for former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.
“It took you two hours to walk anywhere with Peggy — maybe more, because she knew everybody,” Mayor Schaaf said at Moore’s wake on Saturday.
“I’m in such deep grief for myself personally because she’s someone I loved and admired so much,” Schaaf added, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
“And I’m in grief for democracy. (Moore) is someone who believed everyone should have a voice in government. She never gave up in the beautiful essence of democracy, even when it gave up on her. She infused this nuclear love into everything she did.”
Their close friend Kimberly Ellis told NBC San Diego: “These were two almost twin flames that couldn’t bear to be apart in this life or in the other, and they really just had to be together when they left.”
