Peggy Moore, former senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, died in a multi-car crash on Friday evening. She was 60.

Moore and her wife Hope Wood, 48, were in a Jeep when a Chrysler veered into their vehicle, killing them both.

The driver of their Jeep and the Chrysler driver also died. Police said the Chrysler driver veered into the wrong lane before hitting the Jeep head on.

Moore was a campaign worker and senior adviser for Obama. She has been described as a โ€œgiantโ€ in political circles.

She served as deputy field director for Obamaโ€™s 2008 campaign. Moore and Hope met while working on Obamaโ€™s 2008 campaign. Moore was also a senior adviser for former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

โ€œIt took you two hours to walk anywhere with Peggy โ€” maybe more, because she knew everybody,โ€ Mayor Schaaf said at Mooreโ€™s wake on Saturday.

โ€œIโ€™m in such deep grief for myself personally because sheโ€™s someone I loved and admired so much,โ€ Schaaf added, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m in grief for democracy. (Moore) is someone who believed everyone should have a voice in government. She never gave up in the beautiful essence of democracy, even when it gave up on her. She infused this nuclear love into everything she did.โ€

Their close friend Kimberly Ellis told NBC San Diego: โ€œThese were two almost twin flames that couldnโ€™t bear to be apart in this life or in the other, and they really just had to be together when they left.โ€
