A Georgia man flipped his Mercedes-Benz SUV over in an attempt to avoid a repossession.
The incident happened in the parking lot of a Conyers pawn shop on May 5. Pawn shop employees later told police the man wanted to apply for a loan.
While he was in the pawn shop, a tow truck pulled in behind the SUV and blocked it in. The man rushed outside and jumped into the driver’s side of the SUV.
Cell phone video recorded by a pawn shop employee shows the repo man talking with the driver through the passenger window.
The pawn shop employee left the shop to move her car which was in the space next to the SUV. By then the repo man had opened the passenger door of the SUV.
When the pawn shop employee moved her car, the driver suddenly put the SUV into reverse. The repo man hopped into the passenger side just as the SUV’s rear wheels caught the edge of the tow truck ramp and flipped over.
Neither man was injured, but the SUV is a total loss.
According to Atlanta News First, a study shows that Georgia ranks among the top five states for car repossessions.
Liz Coyle, executive director of the consumer advocacy group Georgia Watch, said this is because Georgia is one of the nation’s poorest states.
