R&B singer and songwriter Angela Bofill died from natural causes on Thursday, June 13. She was 70 years old.
A rep for the singer confirmed she passed away at her daughter Shauna Bofill’s home in Vallejo, Calif.
News of her death was also shared in 2 posts on her Facebook page.
The first post read: “ON BEHALF OF MY DEAR FRIEND ANGIE, I AM SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE HER PASSING ON THE MORNING OF JUNE 13TH.”
The post added that her funeral will be held at St. Dominick’s Church in California on June 28 at 1 p.m.
A second post read, “JUST TO CLEAR UP THE CONFUSION. ON BEHALF OF SHAUNA BOFILL, HUSBAND CHRIS PORTUGUESE, WE ARE SADDENED BUT MUST REPORT THAT THE PASSING OF ANGELA YESTERDAY IS INDEED TRUE. WE THANK MELBA MOORE AND MAYSA FOR THEIR EARLY CONDOLENCES. THANKs FOR YOUR MANY POST.”
Bofill’s hits included “I try”, “Angel of the Night”, “Tonight I Give In”, “I’m On Your Side”, “This Time I’ll be Sweeter”, “Let Me Be the One”, “Break It To Me Gently” and more.
On January 10, 2006, Bofill suffered a stroke, and was paralyzed on her left side. She required speech and physical therapy. Bofill did not have health insurance. A benefit concert was organized by her friends in the music industry to help pay her hospital bills.
In July 2007, Bofill suffered another stroke, leaving her with speech and mobility deficits. She received speech and physical therapy at home.
In December 2020, Bofill told Essence magazine about her reaction after rumors of her death had circulated online.
“Friends calling up, ‘Oh my God, am I talking to the ghost of Angela Bofill?’ Thank God it’s not true,” she said.
When asked how it felt to see the tributes pouring in, she replied, “You always must welcome love. I figured, ‘They really like me!’ [I’m just] laughing at it, really. It’s better to have a sense of humor.”
Bofill is survived by her daughter Shauna Bofill.
