A Michigan judge jailed a man for joining a court Zoom call while driving with a suspended license.
Corey Harris joined the Zoom call from his car to request a new court date.
“Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office, actually. So just give me one second. I’m parking right now,” Harris said.
After he parked, Judge J Cedric Simpson expressed surprise that Harris was driving on a suspended license.
“OK, so maybe I don’t understand something,” Simpson said. “This is a driving while license suspended [case], and he was just driving, and he didn’t have a license.”
The judge’s words seemed to catch the public defender off guard.
“Those are the charges, your honor,” she said, “That is correct, your honor.”
“I don’t even know why he would do that,” said Judge Simpson.
Harris looked stunned when the judge ordered him to turn himself in at the county jail by that evening. “Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond,” Simpson said.
“Oh, my god,” Harris said.
