Sherri Shepherd recently shared advice from Barbara Walters that changed her life.
Shepherd said sitting next to Walters on “The View” was a dream come true. Walters died at age 92 in 2022.
“She taught me how to be a tough broad, she taught me how to believe in myself, she taught me how to be curious,” Shepherd said of Walters during an appearance on a late night talk show on the QVC+ channel.
Shepherd, 57, joined ABC’s “The View” alongside Whoopi Goldberg in 2007. She replaced Rosie O’Donnell.
“I cried every day,” said Shepherd of her experience on The View.
“You know when you go to overnight camp and you call your parents, you’re like, ‘I want to come home?’ I called all my friends, I was like, ‘I can’t do this. I want to go back home.’”
Despite the initial difficulty, Shepherd said the experience taught her “to be tough.” She attributed part of her success to great advice from Walters, who became a mentor to her on the talk show.
“Barbara helped me find my voice. She taught me how to be a tough broad, she taught me how to believe in myself, she taught me how to be curious,” Shepherd explained.
But, most importantly, Walters taught Shepherd to lower her voice to appear more confident and masculine.
“People perceive more confidence when your voice is lower,” Shepherd explained. “Now I can’t stop talking like a man, which is why I’m single!”
