Rapper Nelly, who’s expecting a baby with Ashanti, was arrested in Tennessee on felony drug charges.
Nelly, real name Cornell Haynes Jr., was arrested Saturday morning after a state trooper found drugs and handguns on his tour bus.
Another man, Brian Jones, was charged with being a felon in possession of a handgun.
According to reports, the state trooper pulled the bus over at around 9:20 a.m. in Putnam County Saturday. The trooper noted the bus did not have a U.S. Department of Transportation International Fuel Tax Association sticker displayed.
The trooper said he had probable cause to search the bus because he smelled marijuana.
Troopers found five crystalline rocks that tested positive for methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and three handguns, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security said in a statement.
Nelly, 40, and Jones were taken to the Putnam County Jail and booked. Both men posted $10,000 bonds and were released Saturday evening, jail officials said.
Nelly’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said in a statement that the drugs could have belonged to anyone on the bus. He said 15 to 20 people “had access to the bus prior to the [traffic] stop.”
“We are extremely confident that when the facts come out, Nelly will not be associated with the contraband that was allegedly discovered,” Rosenblum said.
