Music icon Sade will release her first new song in years as part of a transgender awareness compilation.
The 65-year-old R&B singer’s only child, Izaak Theo Adu, is a female-to-male transgender.
In a recent message on Instagram, Izaak offered encouraging words to other transgender people who struggle with gender dysphoria.
“I can’t say I know how it feels not to have support as a trans person… [I’m] lucky because I have family and friends that accept and love me just as I am. Don’t let yourself be disrespect [sic] and most of all don’t ever give up.”
Sade hasn’t released new music since her 2010 album Soldier of Love. She will release “Young Lion” as part of the Transa benefit album on November 22. The album is dedicated to Izaak and other trans artists.
Transa includes new songs by Sam Smith, Andre 3000, Jeff Tweedy, and over 100 contributing artists.
The project will support transgender awareness and spotlight both trans and nonbinary artists who struggle with gender dysphoria.
“We started talking about all the gifts that trans artists have been giving to the world and wanted to create a Red Hot project that centered and celebrated those gifts,” said Dust Reid, who organized the Red Hot project alongside artist Massima Bell.
