In a landmark ruling on Monday, the Supreme Court said former President Donald Trump has immunity from federal prosecution.
The 6-3 decision means local prosecutors around the country can’t bring cases against Trump for acts he allegedly committed while he was president.
Going forward, former Presidents can only be prosecuted for unofficial acts they committed while they were not in office.
The ruling overturns a decision from the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. that concluded Trump is not entitled to immunity.
via CBS News — The ruling is an expansion of presidential power, since it extends immunity from criminal prosecutions to former presidents for their official conduct. Never before had the Supreme Court considered whether a former commander in chief could face criminal charges as a result of conduct that occurred while in the Oval Office.
Trump is the first to have held the presidency and faced prosecution. He has pleaded not guilty to four charges stemming from an alleged effort to subvert the transfer of presidential power after the 2020 election.
Trump faced dozens of charges filed by Democratic prosecutors trying to make it difficult for him to campaign for reelection.
