A Kentucky police officer is under investigation after he arrested the world’s No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler outside a PGA golf tournament on Friday.
Police are reviewing video footage of the arrest to determine exactly what happened.
According to reports, a pedestrian was hit by a bus and killed earlier on Friday. A few police officers were on the scene directing traffic after the accident investigation was completed.
Scheffler arrived outside the Valhalla Golf Club at 5 a.m. for his 7 a.m tee time in the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.
He attempted to drive around the cop who “attached” himself to Scheffler’s car. The cop screamed at Scheffler to get out of the car, which he did.
The overzealous cop then placed the world’s No. 1 golfer in handcuffs and escorted him to a patrol car.
ESPN journalist Jeff Darlington witnessed the arrest and attempted to intervene. He told the overzealous cop that Scheffler was participating in the tournament, but the cop didn’t care.
“We didn’t want to be part of this story, we ended up being at least on the periphery,” said ESPN commentator Dave Fleming afterwards.
Scheffler was booked and charged with a felony count.
Critics say the cop should have given Scheffler a warning and let him go. But most cops can’t afford to play golf on their salaries. Which explains why the cop didn’t know who he was.
Scheffler was released and he was able to tee off on time Friday morning.
Scheffler was met with loud applause from golf fans gathered near the 10th tee when he teed off just hours after his arrest.
